Indian Army, Navy and Air Force Ranks and Their Equivalents: The Complete Table
All officer, JCO and other ranks of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force side by side, how insignia work, how a young officer moves up, and the rank questions IOs actually ask.
Why you should know this
If you want to be an officer, you must know the ranks — of your own service and the other two. The IO may ask: "What is the equivalent of a Major in the Navy?" or "What rank will you be commissioned in?" A wrong answer here suggests you have not read even the basics about the life you are choosing.
The good news: it is easy to learn with one table.
Commissioned officer ranks
Officers are commissioned by the President of India. The table goes from the highest rank to the lowest.
| Indian Army | Navy / Air Force equivalent |
|---|
| Field Marshal | Admiral of the Fleet / Marshal of the Air Force |
| General | Admiral / Air Chief Marshal |
| Lieutenant General | Vice Admiral / Air Marshal |
| Major General | Rear Admiral / Air Vice Marshal |
| Brigadier | Commodore / Air Commodore |
| Colonel | Captain / Group Captain |
| Lieutenant Colonel | Commander / Wing Commander |
| Major | Lieutenant Commander / Squadron Leader |
| Captain | Lieutenant / Flight Lieutenant |
| Lieutenant | Sub Lieutenant / Flying Officer |
Watch out for the word "Captain". An Army Captain is a junior officer. A Navy Captain is equal to an Army Colonel. Many candidates mix this up.
Where you start and how you climb (Army names)
| Start | Lieutenant | (Sub Lieutenant / Flying Officer) — where most officers begin |
| ~2 years | Captain | (Lieutenant / Flight Lieutenant) |
| ~6 years | Major | (Lieutenant Commander / Squadron Leader) |
| ~13 years | Lieutenant Colonel | (Commander / Wing Commander) |
| Selection | Colonel and above | Promotion by selection boards |
The five-star ranks
These are honorary ranks given in war or for exceptional service. Only three officers have held them:
- Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw — Army Chief during the 1971 war.
- Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa — the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
- Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh — led the IAF in the 1965 war.
No officer has been made Admiral of the Fleet so far.
Where you will start
- Most officers are commissioned as a Lieutenant (Army), Sub Lieutenant (Navy) or Flying Officer (Air Force).
- Promotions up to Lieutenant Colonel (and equivalent) come mostly with years of service. Higher ranks are by selection boards, where your record matters.
Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs)
The Army has a unique layer between officers and soldiers: JCOs. They are experienced soldiers, promoted from the ranks, who are the link between officers and men. The Navy and Air Force have senior sailors and airmen at similar levels.
| Indian Army | Navy / Air Force (similar level) |
|---|
| Subedar Major | Master Chief Petty Officer I / Master Warrant Officer |
| Subedar | Master Chief Petty Officer II / Warrant Officer |
| Naib Subedar | Chief Petty Officer / Junior Warrant Officer |
In cavalry (armoured) units, the titles are Risaldar Major, Risaldar and Naib Risaldar.
Other ranks
| Indian Army | Navy / Air Force |
|---|
| Havildar | Petty Officer / Sergeant |
| Naik | Leading Seaman / Corporal |
| Lance Naik | Seaman I / Leading Aircraftman |
| Sepoy | Seaman II / Aircraftman |
Different sources list the sailor and airman equivalents slightly differently. Learn the officer table perfectly; for JCOs and other ranks, knowing the Army names and the broad level is enough.
How to read insignia (shoulder badges)
You don't need to draw them, but know the idea:
- Army: a star (the "pip"), the Ashoka emblem and crossed sword and baton. A Lieutenant has two stars, a Captain three, a Major one Ashoka emblem.
- Navy: gold stripes on the shoulder or sleeve, with a curl on the top stripe.
- Air Force: blue-grey stripes (rings) of different widths.
Spot the rank on the shoulder
| Star | Army — stars and emblem | Lieutenant two stars, Captain three, Major the Ashoka emblem |
| Anchor | Navy — gold stripes | Stripes, with a curl on the top one |
| Plane | Air Force — rings | Blue-grey stripes of different widths |
Questions the IO may ask
- "What will be your rank on commissioning? And after two years?"
- "What is a Major called in the Air Force?"
- "Who is the current Chief of Army Staff / Chief of Defence Staff?" (Check the names a week before your SSB.)
- "What is the role of a JCO?"
- "Name India's Field Marshals."
- "Who is senior: a Navy Captain or an Army Captain?" (Navy Captain — equal to a Colonel.)
Mistakes to avoid
- Don't mix up Captain (Army) and Captain (Navy).
- Don't call JCOs "officers" in a loose way — say Junior Commissioned Officers and explain they rise from the ranks.
- Don't guess the current Chiefs. Names change; check before your SSB.
- Don't memorise three columns blindly. Learn the Army column, then link each rank across: Major → Lieutenant Commander → Squadron Leader.

Test yourself
What is a Major called in the Air Force?
Answer: Squadron Leader. Major = Lieutenant Commander (Navy) = Squadron Leader.
Who is senior: an Army Captain or a Navy Captain?
Answer: A Navy Captain — equal to an Army Colonel. A common trap in interviews.
Which of these officers did NOT hold a five-star rank?
Answer: General Bipin Rawat. General Rawat was a four-star officer and India's first CDS.
At what rank do most Army officers start?
Answer: Lieutenant. Subedar is a JCO rank, not an officer entry rank.
